About This Course

PRIVATE INVITE-ONLY COURSE - DO NOT SHARE - The AMEL Institute provides select young activists in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) with practical knowledge and skills to carry out their human rights and civil society activism more safely and effectively. The goal is to transfer know-how from experienced activists and experts to brave and creative young people in the MEA region who are taking action to address rights violations, inequalities, injustices, discrimination, conflicts, or similar issues affecting their communities.

The AMEL Institute program is an interactive online leadership program in which trainees engage in cross-cultural communication and building allyship with activists across the Middle East and Africa. The program will be taught by experienced activists, seasoned practitioners, and select experts from renowned institutions, such as Stanford and Harvard, who will help participants build knowledge and skills in: activism well-being and safety, including online and offline security and mental health; human rights and gender inclusivity; genocide prevention, including Holocaust education; non-violent movement-building, conflict transformation and peacebuilding; democracy and democratic development; communicating about your activism/causes, including using new media tools;

Mohamed Abubakr

President of the African Middle Eastern Leadership Project (AMEL). Mohamed is a human rights and peace activist, with over 15 years of experience leading organizations such as SudanAid association, O Noor Foundation, YaLa Young Leaders and other initiatives to assist and empower youth, women, refugees and other vulnerable groups. Mohamed has documented, reported, and mobilized against human rights abuses across the Middle East and Africa (MEA) and has led training programs for thousands of activists across MEA.

Megan Hallahan

Executive Director of the African Middle Eastern Leadership Project (AMEL). Megan has nearly 20 years of experience leading international youth, peace, democracy and online education initiatives. She previously served as Director of the YaLa Academy, where she led online training programs for thousands of activists in the Middle East and Africa and was Secretary-General of the Ara Pacis Council for Dignity, Forgiveness, Justice and Reconciliation.
